Early Life
Born Ugbekile David Osemeke on May 10, 2001, Boy Spyce hails from Edo State, Nigeria, but was raised in Isolo, Lagos State. Growing up in Jakande Estate, Isolo, he experienced life in a vibrant, densely populated community, which shaped his creativity and storytelling skills.
He attended Lagos State Model College Kankon, Badagry, for his secondary education and is the last born in a family of seven.
Career
Boy Spyce’s music journey began in 2019 when he started posting song covers on social media platforms. His breakout moment came in 2021 after he dropped a cover of Wizkid’s global hit “Essence” featuring Tems. The viral success of the cover caught the attention of Don Jazzy, the CEO of Mavin Records.
On Christmas Day 2019, Don Jazzy sent Boy Spyce a life-changing direct message. After over a year of grooming and development at Mavin Academy, Boy Spyce was officially unveiled as a Mavin artist on April 14, 2022.
The next day, he released his self-titled debut EP “Boy Spyce,” which shot to number one on Nigeria’s Apple Music chart. The project was praised by music critics, with The Native describing it as “a collage of vibrant sounds and tradition.”
Since then, Boy Spyce has delivered several hit songs and impressive features:
- “Bad Things” was a standout single featured on Pulse Nigeria’s Future Sounds Vol. 6.
- He appeared on Mavin’s all-star track “Overdose” alongside Crayon and Ayra Starr, a song that topped charts and dominated the airwaves.
- He also featured on the Mavin collective single “Won Da Mo” in November 2022, alongside top acts like Rema, Magixx, Ladipoe, and others.
In January 2023, Boy Spyce dropped his first solo single after his EP titled “Folake,” which peaked at number 5 on the Nigeria TurnTable Top 100 chart. The song, produced by Sparrq Beatz, was accompanied by a colorful music video directed by Ahmed Mosh, garnering over 5 million views on YouTube by early 2024.
Recognized for his talent and potential, OkayAfrica named Boy Spyce as one of the top artists to watch in 2023, alongside artists like Khaid and Odumodublvck.
Continuing his rise, Boy Spyce released “Pepe” on December 7, 2023, which peaked at number 23 on the TurnTable Nigeria Top 100 and number 13 on the Top Streaming Songs chart in January 2024.
