Who is Rema?

Birthdate and Early Life
Divine Ikubor, better known as Rema, was born on May 1, 2000, in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. As a native of Southern Nigeria, Rema’s early life was deeply influenced by his Christian upbringing and the vibrant music culture of the region.

Career Beginnings
Rema’s musical journey began in his teenage years, where he honed his skills in singing and rapping during secondary school. His passion for music led him to form a group called RnA with his friend Alpha P in 2013. The name “RnA” is derived from the initials of their stage names. The duo gained recognition after winning the second season of Pikolo’s Dream Alive talent show, which resulted in a record deal with Peak Entertainment. Their debut single, “Mercy,” was recorded at Dream Alive Studio in Benin City and was well-received, marking the beginning of Rema’s rise in the music industry.

Breakthrough and Success
Rema’s breakthrough came in 2019 when he signed with Jonzing World, a subsidiary of the renowned Mavin Records. His debut single “Dumebi” quickly became a sensation, dominating music charts across Africa. The success of “Dumebi” was followed by the release of “Iron Man,” which gained international attention and featured on Barack Obama’s 2019 summer playlist.

Rema’s self-titled debut EP, released in 2019, was a significant milestone, topping the Apple Music Nigeria charts. This EP solidified his position as a prominent figure in the Nigerian music scene.

Rema’s talent and hard work earned him notable accolades. On October 19, 2019, he won the Headies’ Next Rated Award and was also nominated for the Viewer’s Choice Award at the 13th Headies. Additionally, Rema has been recognized with the City People Music Award for Revelation of The Year and The Future Awards Africa Prize for Music.
